On June 8th, 2018, the Center for Biohybrid Medical Systems (CBMS) jointly celebrated with its friends and partners the opening of the institute on the Campus Melaten of the RWTH Aachen University. Amongst the guests were also international speakers: Prof. Dr. Kazunori Kataoka (University of Tokyo), Prof. Dr. Robert Bartlett (University of Michigan Medical School, USA) and Prof. Dr. med. Wolfram-Hubertus Zimmermann (University Medical Center Göttingen).

The federal government and the federal state North-Rhine Westphalia sponsored the construction with about 40m Euro on application of the Institutes of Applied Medical Engineering (Prof. Thomas Schmitz-Rode) and Experimental Molecular Imaging (Prof. Fabian Kiessling).

The CBMS constitutes a diverse research and development building for the Cluster ‘Biomedical Engineering’ with flexibly shapeable System Laboratories that interact with each other. In these, the feasability of the medical systems can already be verified at the beginning of their formation. With the help of technical and biological materials, the biohybrid medical systems get designed, produced and controlled. Therefore, these systems substitute the conventional utitlization of synthetic implants (e.g. heart valves) or therapies (chemotherapy). Biohybrid implants of the cardiovascular system and supporting systems of the lung as well as diagnostic and therapeutic nano drugs for the personalized therapy of tumors and inflamatory diseases ought to attain a better compatability and functionality for the patient.
