The Grünenthal Group acquires the startup Adhesys Medical from Aachen as well as its US subsidiary Adhesys Medical Inc. to expand the medical products business. In the future, the new method for wound closure will complement the pharmaceutical company’s portfolio, which has hitherto focused on novel drugs in the indications of pain, gout and inflammatory diseases.

Through this acquisition, Grünenthal has obtained the worldwide development and commercialization rights of an innovative pipeline of surgical sealants together with the underlying technology platform. The plastic-based material is an alternative to wound closure by sutures or staples. The first innovative topical skin adhesive is expected to receive European-wide CE Marketing Certification within the next 12 months.

Adhesys Medical was founded in Aachen in 2013 and has run a US subsidiary since 2015 with the aim of achieving approval in the American market.
